Again, please read the parable from Luke 8:4-15 or Matthew 13:1-23, if you read both you'll get more out of it given the different perspectives.

Now, let's focus on the sketch and passage.

Consider the following:

  1. Were you ever the rocky ground soil, when you heard the word of God? If so, do you remember the time? If not, step into the shoes of someone you know or imagine to be like this and ponder what makes this person "rocky ground".

  2. What made you joyful or what might have made you joyful about hearing the word of God at that time?

  3. What caused or might cause your joy and faith to wither away?

Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away…As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away.

-Matthew 13:5-6 & 20-21 (ESV)
