Life Lesson(s)…

Luke emphasizes three lessons taught by Jesus in Acts 1 as set forth in the quote above. Specifically, Jesus instructs His disciples after His resurrection that:

  1. The authority of setting times and seasons rests with Father God;

  2. Heartfelt obedience to the instruction of the Word (the Bible) and by the Word (Jesus) will release blessing for the believers; and

  3. When the Holy Spirit comes upon the believers, they will receive power to witness to the world about who Jesus is and what He has done for mankind if they choose to believe in Him.

Authority of setting times and seasons rests with Father God. Turn to Ecclessiastes 3:1-8 and Daniel 2:21 as to what Jesus meant. Yet, the Lord blessed some with an understanding of His times and seasons (1 Chronicles 12:32) to know what to do and to be awake (Romans 13:11), but many have been rebuked by Jesus for their inability to do so (Luke 12:54-56).

Heartfelt obedience to the instruction of the Word (the Bible) leads to blessing as exemplified in the Old and New Testament (Nehemiah 8-9; Deuteronomy 31:9-13; Joshua 8:30-34; Acts 1:12-26). With the New Testament, the Word became flesh in the form of Jesus (John 1:1-18). By accepting Jesus as one's savior and walking in relationship with Jesus, believers can receive the power of the Holy Spirit which is a blessing and another aspect of relationship with our triune God. Glimpses of Holy Spirit are seen in Genesis 1:2; Isaiah 42:1-9; Psalm 104:30; Judges 6:34; 2 Samuel 23:2; Psalm 143:10; Ezekiel 36:27 and Isaiah 11:1-5 just to name a few.

Your Thoughts…

  1. Can you see the interconnectedness between the Old and New Testament?

  2. What is your theological point of view regarding the Holy Spirit? Does your viewpoint expand or restrict the role of the Holy Spirit in your life? Do you think this restricts or expands your view about Father, Son & Holy Spirit today?

  3. What from Acts 1 is applicable to your life?

[Jesus] said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
