NEHEMIAH

4/1/2023

Read: Nehemiah 1 (AMP)

Biblical Lesson…

Bad news, sad news…Information reaches the ears of exiled Nehemiah as he is visited by his kinsmen.  They inform him of the suffering of the remnant that had returned to the destroyed city of Jerusalem.  Nehemiah's compassion for his fellow countrymen, remembrance of his homeland and remembrance of Israel's covenant with God Almighty cause Nehemiah to fervently pray. He prays for forgiveness and seeks guidance from the Lord over what and how he, Nehemiah, may serve the Lord to resuscitate that which appears to be hopeless.

The concepts of repentance and guidance from the Lord in hopeless situations hold true in the New Testament as well. We see that in Christ's ministry and his interaction with everyone.  Consider application of these concepts in regard to Simon Peter's relationship with Jesus. (Matthew 26:69-75; John 21:14-16)  Repentance and submission to the Lord's guiding hand reroutes the path to where hope is returned to situations that had at one time appeared hopeless.

Today's Version…

What's today's version for you? For many in society today, the struggle against hopelessness comes in many forms, be it emotional, economic, relational or health-related. Everyone deals with an aspect of life where things appear hopeless. Think about Nehemiah's approach about turning to the Lord God Almighty for answers to what seems hopeless.

What to do…

It is a matter of faith in trusting that the Lord will guide you in the way that is right, loving and just.  Try the following:

  1. Pray (communicate with) to the Lord:

    • Repent of your sins;

    • Forgive those who have trespassed against you;

    • Seek the Lord's guidance on the matter and relinquish your control;

  2. "Listen" for His response. It may come in any form or method.
